Protestors upset Libyan cabinet vote
Protesters have broken up a session of Libya’s parliament, disrupting a vote of confidence on a new Cabinet and demanding representation for their city.
The protesters, from the city of Zawiya, stormed the chamber in Tripoli, chanting slogans against recently elected Prime Minister Mustafa Abushagur.
Politicans left the General National Congress floor, saying they would not vote under pressure, said GNC spokesman Omar Humidan.
Today’s demonstration reflects the divisive make-up of Libya, where rival groups and tribes are all demanding government representation.
Yesterday, Mr Abushagur presented his Cabinet, made up mostly of technocrats from Libya’s largest cities. It includes one woman.
The country’s liberal alliance, led by former prime minister Mahmoud Jibril, is not represented. Talks between Mr Abushagur and Mr Jibril failed to achieve agreement.
