A wildfire has forced at least 2,000 people to evacuate their seaside homes in California, fire chiefs said today.

The fire raging in the city of Rancho Palos Verdes was feeding on dry, dense brush, they said.

Fire Captain Mike Brown said about 400 firefighters and four helicopters are battling the blaze which burnt out at least 75 acres overnight.

TV news footage showed structures on fire and at least one entirely engulfed in flames. Mr Brown says crews will assess damage but could not confirm if any homes were damaged or destroyed.
