Andy Keogh was pitched into battle with world champions Italy as the Republic of Ireland attempted to drag themselves back into the race for automatic qualification.
The 22-year-old Wolves striker was, as expected, drafted in on the right side of midfield in place of the injured Aiden McGeady in the only change to the side which drew 1-1 with Bulgaria at the weekend.
Group Eight leaders Italy also made changes as Matteo Brighi, Simone Pepe and, making his first senior international start, Giampaolo Pazzini replaced Angelo Palombo, Fabio Quagliarella and Antonio di Natale.
