Arsonists were suspected of starting some of the wildfires that destroyed 30 homes in south-eastern Australia, police said today.

Cooler weather, even some rain, today helped hundreds of firefighters in Victoria state get on top of fires that flared last week during one of the longest and most intense heatwaves on record.

The houses burned were in the farming region of Gippsland on Friday night and Saturday as fires reached their peak.

Police fire controller Ben Rankin said “all indications” were that the most damaging fire was deliberately lit.
