The threat of strikes at brewery giant Carlsberg in Britain, which could have hit lager supplies in the run-up to Christmas, ended today after a dispute over pay and working practices was resolved.

Members of the Transport and General Workers Union at the Northampton brewery were due to launch a 16-day walkout from today but the workers have accepted a new deal.

Ian Deninson, Carlsberg’s human resources director, said: “We have reached a satisfactory settlement which takes an important step towards our goal of increasing flexibility and multi-skilling. These improvements will help us meet the needs of our customers.”

Alan Shortt, chairman of the local TGWU branch, added: “I am pleased that we have reached a good agreement which delivers tangible benefits for all our members. We can now focus on making this deal a success.”
