The town of Ballygarvan in Co Cork has been approved for the county and group broadband scheme (GBS).
The scheme is open to all smaller and rural communities of less than 1,500 people. It enables local communities to draw up and implement their own broadband plans either on their own, or in partnership with broadband service providers.
Up to 55% capital funding is available for projects. The scheme is part of the National Development Plan, which is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
To date under the first phase of the GBS, 33 broadband projects have been approved.
Minister for Communications Noel Dempsey announced the Ballygarvan decision today.
