Golf: Harrington edges out McGinley to win Volvo Masters

Padraig Harrington holed a 25ft birdie putt on the last green to win the Volvo Masters in Spain.

Padraig Harrington finally got rid of his runner-up tag for the 2001 season with a win at the Volvo Masters in Spain this afternoon.

Harrington had finished in second place a total of seven times this season and was growing increasingly frustrated with his failure to clinch a win on the tour.

Harrington birdied three of the last four holes in the shortened tournament to push fellow Irishman, Paul McGinley, off the top spot on the leaderboard. His final round, a six-under-par 66, gave him a final score of 12 under after three rounds.

McGinley, who led the tournament from day one shot a 70 to finish a shot behind Harrington on 11 under.

The tournament had to be reduced to three days after heavy winds prevented the third round from going ahead and Harrington made the most of his opportunity to claim a victory in the very last tournament of the season.

Australia’s Adam Scott finished in third place on 10 under with Darren Clarke, Mathias Gronberg and Robert Karlsson finishing joint fourth on nine-under-par.

The final leaderboard reads:

1 HARRINGTON, Padraig IRL -12

2 MCGINLEY, Paul IRL -11

3 SCOTT , Adam AUS -10

T4 KARLSSON, Robert SWE -9

T4 CLARKE, Darren NIR -9

T4 GRÖNBERG, Mathias SWE -9

T7 JOHNSTONE, Tony ZIM -8

T7 LANGER, Bernhard GER -8

T7 MONTGOMERIE, Colin SCO -8
