More injury woe for Mercer

Jockey Keith Mercer faces another lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a fall at Kelso yesterday.

Mercer has endured wretched luck with injuries over the last couple of years and will once again be out of action for a prolonged period after his mount, Shan Blue, was brought down by Mini Beck in a handicap hurdle.

Mini Beck’s rider, Peter Buchanan, has given up his one ride at Sedgefield today, but he should be back in the saddle within the next few days.

Agent Richard Hale, who represents both jockeys, said: “Keith is going for X-rays at Northallerton Hospital, but he thinks he’s done his left collarbone and also injured his right hand – although that has to be confirmed.

“He couldn’t have had worse luck, really.

“Peter twisted his ankle and couldn’t get a boot on, but he thinks he’ll be back riding on Tuesday.

“He just need to give it a rest and get some ice on it, so he’s not too bad.”
