A school policeman was shot by a teenage gunman in Los Angeles today but escaped serious injury because he was wearing a bulletproof vest.

A school policeman was shot by a teenage gunman in Los Angeles today but escaped serious injury because he was wearing a bulletproof vest.

The gunman fired once into the officer’s chest after a confrontation at Belmont High School, The teenager and a second youth with him then ran away.

The officer told police he was confronted by two youths, aged 17 or 18. One had a handgun.

It wasn’t immediately known what led to the shooting and it wasn’t known if the teenagers were students.

Dozens of officers scoured the neighbourhood and there was a search of the school, where classes were being held, an officer said.
