A grand jury in Baltimore has charged six police officers on homicide and assault charges after the death of Freddie Gray.
The 25-year-old black man died in police custody last month. His death sparked rioting over the role of race in law enforcement in the US.
Lawyers for the six officers, who are free on bail, have called the prosecution’s case weak and have filed for dismissal of the charges.
Baltimore state attorney Marilyn Mosby said they will be arraigned in just over a month's time.
"These officers, who are presumed innocent until proven guilty, and now scheduled to be arraigned on July 2," she said.
