It has been reported that as many as 18 people have been killed after South African police opened fire on striking staff at a platinum mine.
Police north-west of Johannesburg have been caught in a violent stand-off with miners for over a week.
It is believed they moved in after urging the workers to give up their weapons.
Gia Nicolaides, is a South African journalist at the scene:
"We believe at this stage that some of those protesters were armed with fire arms and they also opened fire at police", she said
"Several people were seen lying on the open field I counted certainly five bodies".
