Champion jockey Tony McCoy has reiterated his pride at being nominated among the 10 candidates ahead of the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year award on Sunday evening.
The has been plenty of publicity behind McCoy’s bid by the Racing for Change organisation and while it has not come naturally to him, McCoy has thrown his own weight behind it.
While the whole of racing would love to see him crowned, not surprisingly he has come in for a bit of ribbing among his weighing-room colleagues.
Speaking on Channel 4’s The Morning Line he said: “It’s been an interesting week or two.
“Obviously there has been a lot of attention on it which is something that has really shocked me but it’s just nice to be mentioned among the 10 nominees.
“They are all winners, they are all at the top of their sport and you only have to look at the list and you see people like Lee Westwood, the world’s No.1 golfer and David Haye a world champion, they are all winners.
“I’m more into my job than anything else but if I can help my sport in any way I will. Racing has given me a wonderful life so if I can promote it in any way I will.
“There’s been a few interesting facial features drawn on the cut-outs and the likes of Mattie Batchelor have had some interesting t-shirts drawn up!
“I’ve been accused of being miserable in the past so I’m trying to turn the corner if you like!”
