Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas today vetoed a decision by Hamas to appoint a top militant as a security chief, two of his aides said.

Abbas vetoed the appointment of Jamal Abu Samhadana, who is No.2 on Israel’s wanted list and has been involved in attacks against Israel in the past.

Abbas also annulled a decision by Interior Minister Said Siyam of Hamas to set up a volunteer security force that was to consist of militants from various factions.

As president, Abbas wields considerable powers and he has the right to approve or reject key appointments.
