US stocks are closing out another strong quarter, giving the Standard & Poor’s 500 index its sixth straight quarterly gain.

US stocks are closing out another strong quarter, giving the Standard & Poor’s 500 index its sixth straight quarterly gain.

The market was mixed on the day as trading was muted ahead of the July 4 holiday in the US.

The S&P 500 edged down less than a point to close at 1,960, two points below the record high it set on June 20.

The Dow Jones industrial average lost 25 points, or 0.2%, to 16,826. The Nasdaq composite rose 10 points, or 0.2%, to 4,408.

Homebuilder stocks rose following a report that the number of Americans who signed contracts to buy homes shot up in May. DR Horton gained 3%.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note edged down to 2.52%.
