FA probes Villa-Blues tunnel bust-up

The Football Association is set to investigate reports of a tunnel bust-up following Birmingham’s derby victory over Aston Villa at St Andrews yesterday.

The Football Association is set to investigate reports of a tunnel bust-up following Birmingham’s derby victory over Aston Villa at St Andrews yesterday.

The FA is today awaiting the report from referee Mike Riley who is believed to have missed the incident as he was one of the last to leave the pitch.

But the FA, determined to crack down on tunnel rows, will look into the allegations even if it not mentioned in Riley’s report.

They will speak to both clubs and the local police to try to establish a clearer picture of the incident.

A brawl involving all 22 players was reportedly sparked by Villa midfielder Lee Hendrie’s anger at showboating by Blues defender Mario Melchiot.

Stewards waded in to break up the melee which is said to have lasted for only a matter seconds.

Birmingham played down any fracas with boss Steve Bruce insisting: “I didn’t see anything at all – that’s all I’m saying“.

Meanwhile a Blues spokesman insisted today: “An incident is not mentioned in the referee’s report and we believe that is the end of the matter.”
