Philippines police said they thwarted a possible terrorist attack in a pre-dawn raid today that killed two suspected Muslim militants and left three others in custody.

Two bombs were found in a house in Darong village, about 900 miles southeast of Manila. Also found was a map of Davao city, about 12 miles away.

President Gloria Mapacapagal Arroyo visited the city briefly a few hours later. Also confiscated were two pistols, a grenade and other bomb-making gear.

Police said they came under fire as they raided the house at 3am, and said the suspects may belong to the Abu Sayyaf guerilla group, which has been linked to Osama bin Laden’s al-Qaida terrorist network.
