A teenager today took his first step to big screen stardom by scooping the top prize in a national video clip competition.

Aspiring filmmaker Paul Leonard plans to buy his first camera with his €4,000 winnings from the Credit Union.

The 14-year-old second year student, from Grange, Co Sligo, beat more than 100 other entrants who recorded a 60 second video clip on what makes their place special.

It features his punk rock band, Rampant, and shows areas around the county such as Ben Bulben and places he likes to hang out, including where he writes music and performs with his band.

“My brother got me a green screen in America, so I based my idea on that, showing the changing picture of Sligo in the background while performing with my band,” said the keen surfer.

“It’s amazing I won. I wasn’t expecting it at all. I will definitely work in music or film-making when I leave school.”

Credit Union president Uel Adair said the competition encouraged young people to express the pride they feel in their own place.

“All the entrants certainly did that in style and we’ve been delighted with the number and standard of entries we received,” he added.
