The Gaza Strip’s main gateway to the outside world was closed again today due to an Israeli security alert in the area, European monitors at the crossing said.
Monitors at the Rafah crossing between Gaza and Egypt were notified by Israeli officials last night that owing to continuing security concerns a different, nearby crossing used by the monitors to reach their posts at Rafah was sealed off.
The monitors were therefore unable to open the Rafah terminal this morning, said Nigel Milverton, a spokesman for the monitors.
Milverton said he had no indication when normal operations would be resumed. “Our teams are on standby,” he said.
The crossing was closed on Wednesday following an Israeli security alert, then reopened for a while yesterday.
The Israeli military said the nearby Kerem Shalom crossing, used by the monitors, was now closed because of fears of an attack there.
