Paul Merson has returned to training at Walsall after undergoing treatment in the United States for “addictive problems”.

The 35-year-old former England international, who has fought well-publicised battles against drink, drugs and gambling problems, left the country a month ago to seek help.

He flew back to England yesterday and after recovering from jet lag he returned to training with the Saddlers this morning.

Walsall boss Colin Lee said: “We had an excellent report saying Paul had been responding to the treatment and they’d been very pleased with his progress.

“His fitness is something we’ll have to review but there was a small gymnasium where he was and a few hundred miles of sand so he could run all day if he wanted to.

“But Paul Merson also has an ability not to have to train flat out all the time.”
