There was a decrease of almost 4% in retail sales in the year to October, new figures from the Central Statistics Office show.
However, there was a slight improvement in the amount of cash shoppers splashed out last month.
The volume of retail sales in October rose by 0.1%, compared to September.
Fuel, furniture and lighting and the motor trade were among the categories that showed month-on-month increases.
