An American on trial for secretly entering the house of democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi is in hospital after suffering seizures, medical sources said today.

John Yettaw, 53, was admitted to Yangon’s main general hospital yesterday and his condition was improving, said officials.

Mr Yettaw faces up to five years in prison for helping to violate the terms of Ms Suu Kyi’s house arrest by swimming to her lakeside residence and staying for two nights in May.

A court is to deliver a verdict on his case, and that of Ms Suu Kyi, who is charged with violating terms of her detention, next week.

The 64-year-old Nobel Peace laureate could also be jailed for five years along with two companions who resided with her.

Mr Yettaw, of Falcon, Missouri, testified that he swam to Ms Suu Kyi’s house to warn her that he had had a vision that she would be assassinated.

He reportedly suffers from diabetes and other health problems, including post-traumatic stress disorder syndrome from his time in the US military.
