'Public should be careful when choosing an estate agent': IAVI president

The President of the Irish Auctioneers and Values Institute has warned that people should be careful when choosing an estate agent.

Robert Ganly made his comments this morning at the organizations' annual conference and also said there is an unacceptably high number of unregulated independent auctioneers and estate agents who lack 'either the training, education, or experience to trade at a high level' within the profession.

He was using the occasion to launch a campaign by the IAVI that aims to raise awareness amongst the public of the standards they should seek before engaging an auctioneer. The campaign will highlight the IAVI's commitment to ethical and educational standards and continuing professional development for its members.

He said: “It is a sad fact of life that the reputations of many can be tarnished by the greed and short-sightedness of the few. The fact is that there have been a number of cases in the past few years where rogue individuals have engaged in activity that could damage the name of our profession and we are eager to address that issue”

Mr Ganly continued: “IAVI members are subject to the highest standards and regulation in the land. We have a strict and rigorous disciplinary code, and we take very strong and swift action against any member who fails to meet our standards.”
