India has claimed that the al-Qaida terrorist network has been operating in Kashmir for years.

The claim was made by Indian Interior Minister Lal Krishna Advani today after welcoming the decision by the United States to freeze the assets of a Pakistan-based militant group believed to be funded by Osama bin Laden.

The Bush administration last night named Jaish-e-Mohammed, a Pakistan-based Islamic militant group which has carried out attacks in Kashmir, among 39 individuals and organisations with suspected terrorist ties that would have their assets frozen.

President George Bush told Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee last week that the group would soon be outlawed.
