A plane carrying more than 200 British holidaymakers was forced to land mid-flight after smoke began pouring from an onboard oven.
Britannia flight BY278B from Rhodes was due to land at Stansted Airport tonight but instead diverted to Brindisi in Italy 40 minutes into the four-hour journey.
The mid-air drama began when a member of the cabin crew noticed a large amount of smoke coming from the galley area of the plane.
The crew acted quickly to tackle the smoke using fire extinguishers.
A Britannia spokeswoman described the incident as “minor” and said no one was injured. “The crew are all well trained for this sort of thing,” she said. “The captain took the decision to divert to Brindisi as a precaution. We did not want to take any risks to the safety of our passengers.”
