Peres says Israel will honour talks pledge

Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres has said Israel will not retaliate for yesterday’s drive-by shooting in the West Bank and will honour an American request to restart peace talks with the Palestinians.

Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres has said Israel will not retaliate for yesterday’s drive-by shooting in the West Bank and will honour an American request to restart peace talks with the Palestinians.

Mr Peres said in the 53 years of Israel’s existence, the US has never turned down a request from the Israelis.

For this reason, he said, Israel should honour the promises it has made to America and open talks as soon as possible.

Calm in the Middle East is seen as crucial to the United States’ efforts to recruit Arab nations into its so-called "coalition against terrorism".
