Schools in the US are installing cameras in their canteens to monitor what pupils eat.

A $2m grant from the Department of Agriculture will enable schools in San Antonio to install sophisticated equipment which will read food bar codes embedded in the food trays.

Researchers hope that by snapping pictures of what has been served and what is left over they will learn about pupil's eating preferences, and will be able to tackle childhood obesity more easily.

Each reading of a child's meal will show the size of the serving, and its calorie, fibre, sugar, and protein content.

Dr Roberto Trevino said: "We will be able to determine whether current programs that are aimed at preventing obesity work, and whether they are really changing students' behaviour."
