Table-toppers Monaghan took a late victory at Inniskeen as Leitrim and Sligo also recorded wins in Division 4 of the Allianz National Hurling league this afternoon.

At Inniskeen South Down looked like recording their first victory of the current campaign as they held a 1-09 to 0-10 lead in injury-time.

However Monaghan had the final say in this keenly contested affair with John Greene popping in for a 73rd minute goal to ensure a 1-10 to 1-09 victory.

In blustery conditions at Ballyconnell visitors Sligo took a comfortable 2-15 to 1-07 victory over Cavan to maintain their second place in the league table.

Cavan started strongly thanks to a Paul Sheridan goal but Sligo sharpshooter Keith Raymond overturned this early deficit with a goal and four points inside a six-minute spell to ensure his side held a six-point lead by the interval.

Sligo kept on top on the restart with a brace of Dermot Clarke frees and a second goal opening up a 2-13 to 1-07 lead with 12 minutes remaining.

Cavan were held scoreless in the closing quarter, as late points from Liam Reidy and Michael Shelley ensured Sligo took an 11-point victory.

Meanwhile at Carrick On Shannon, Leitrim took their second win of the 2009 NHL thanks to a slender 0-15 to 1-11 win over Fermanagh.

Fermanagh broke into an early 1-04 to 0-04 lead, with Ryan Bogue keeping the visitors on top but Leitrim cut the gap to the minimum by the interval thanks to scores from Colm Hayes and Gary Hickey.

Leitrim continued their good work on the restart thanks to a Clem Cunniffe pointed free, but the closing quarter of this game was keenly contested before Leitrim battled bravely to take the final score and secure a one-point win.
