Real boss hails Beckham performance

Real Madrid coach Wanderley Luxemburgo poured lavish praise on David Beckham following the England captain’s man-of-the-match performance in last night’s 2-1 victory over Olympiacos.

Beckham set up Madrid’s first goal – scored by Raul in the ninth minute – and sent over another 30 telling crosses later in the contest, most of which his team-mates managed to spurn.

Madrid needed a late winner from substitute Roberto Soldado to seal the win, their first in the Champions League this season, but Luxemburgo preferred to single out Beckham for adulation.

“Beckham has been playing well for a long time,” said Luxemburgo. “This is not the first time he has played really well.”

Olympiacos coach Trond Sollied agreed with his counterpart that Beckham had been the decisive factor in the game.

“Our tactic was very simple – get so close they couldn’t get any service,” he said. “We succeeded with Roberto Carlos, but we couldn’t get close to Beckham.”
