New figures have confirmed that the economy is slowing down dramatically.
Government spending has increased by almost €700m, but the surplus has fallen by over €800m in comparison with January of last year, according to the latest Exchequer returns.
Tax revenues for last month were down €127m on the previous year's figure.
The surplus is down €819m to just over €380m for the same period.
The news is expected to prompt strong attacks from the Opposition over the Government's handling of the economy.
