Around 400 jobs are under threat in the North as Woolworths begins a pre-Christmas stock clearance amid ongoing efforts to save its shops from going out of business.
The company has been put into administration, but the administrators have failed to find a buyer and are now selling off stock at bargain prices.
The administrators say some shops could close for good by the end of this year unless a buyer emerges.
The shopworkers' union USDAW has criticised the manner in which the stock sell-off was announced publicly yesterday before staff were informed of the latest developments.
