Leinster too strong for Edinburgh

Leinster 35 Edinburgh 13

Leinster’s imported Super 12s out-half David Holwell opened the scoring against Edinburgh with a penalty after just five minutes in his first game for the province at Donnybrook today.

But Chris Patterson equalised with a penalty for Edinburgh a few minutes later before prop Allan Jacobsen put the Scots 8-3 ahead with the first try of the match after 14 minutes.

Subsequent Leinster pressure eventually resulted in a try for hooker Shane Byrne after a lineout and maul near the Scottish goal-line.

Holwell converted to make it 10-8 as the half-hour mark approached.

The Irishmen then had to soak up some pressure but despite some Edinburgh chances Leinster held their two-point lead going in at half-time.

They increased that lead in the second half with a penalty, but substitute Rory Lawson’s fresh legs helped him equalise with a try for Edinburgh.

Denis Hickey got the next score with his first touch of the ball and added another after some strong running from Gordon Darcy and Brian O’Driscoll.

Another sub, flanker Aiden McCullen, gave Leinster their bonus point with an injury time try, which Holwell converted with the last kick of the match.

Summary:

Leinster Tries: S. Byrne, D. Hickie 2, McCullen. Cons: Holwell 3. Pens: Holwell 3.

Edinburgh Tries: Jacobsen, Lawson. Pens: Paterson.

Att: 5,500.
