The Pentagon believes Osama bin Laden could be planning to escape from Afghanistan by helicopter.

The US Defence Secretary says bin Laden may have access to a helicopter. Bin Laden is reported to have said he'd rather die than be arrested by the US.

A Taliban spokesman has said he will never be arrested alive. Donald Rumsfeld believes bin Laden could still escape by helicopter and rendezvous with a waiting jet in a nearby country.

He said 75% of the Taliban's fleet of helicopters has been destroyed but some may have been hidden and available to bin Laden.
