Restaurant fines customers for leaving food

A Japanese restaurant has started fining customers who leave food.

Customers at The Hachikyo will be forced to pay a surcharge if they leave up to "one grain of rice in their bowl", but all leftovers will be donated to local fisherman.

However, the strict rule only applies to the seafood establishment's signature dish tsukko meshi - a bowl of rice topped with all-you-can-eat salmon roe - which is priced at 1,890 yen (€15.12).

The menu states: "The working conditions for fishermen are harsh and so dangerous that it's not unknown for lives to be lost.

"To show our gratitude and appreciation for the food they provide, it is forbidden to leave even one grain of rice in your bowl.

"Customers who do not finish their tsukko meshi must give a donation."
