A detective in the Kieren Fallon race-fixing trial today denied trying to suppress comments from Channel 4 Racing pundit Jim McGrath.

A detective in the Kieren Fallon race-fixing trial today denied trying to suppress comments from Channel 4 Racing pundit Jim McGrath.

Mr McGrath had a meeting with four police officers investigating a number of races where jockeys were suspected of not letting their horses win.

But he later expressed surprise that, following his disagreement with criticism from an Australian steward, he was not allowed to make a statement on the jockeys' performances, the Old Bailey court in London was told.

Mr McGrath, a regular on the Morning Line programme and managing director of Timeform, was told his statement would be about the form of horses and betting.

Acting Detective Inspector Mark Manning was asked why Mr McGrath's notes were not put in evidence and disclosed to the defence.

George Carter-Stephenson, QC, for jockey Fergal Lynch, asked which other document "undermines the prosecution expert?".

Mr Manning said he had not asked for the notes which was an "oversight", but that Mr McGrath had only been asked to give his opinion on his area of expertise.

Mr Manning added: "I think there was a misunderstanding about what Mr McGrath was being asked to do."

Six-time champion jockey Fallon and five others deny plotting to allow 27 horses to lose so Rodgers could win bets on races.

Jockeys Fallon (aged 42) formerly of Newmarket, Cambridgeshire, but now of Tipperary; Lynch (aged 29) of Boroughbridge, North Yorkshire; and Darren Williams (aged 29) of Leyburn, North Yorkshire, deny the conspiracy between December 2002 and August 2004.

Lynch's brother, Shaun Lynch (aged 38) of Belfast; professional gambler Miles Rodgers (aged 38) of Silkstone, South Yorkshire; and barman Philip Sherkle (aged 42) of Tamworth, Staffordshire, also plead not guilty.

Rodgers also denies concealing the proceeds of crime. All the defendants are on bail.

The trial was adjourned to tomorrow.
