Cardiff chairman Sam Hammam has backed claims by Bluebirds deputy chief executive Peter Ridsdale that he was ejected from the Elland Road boardroom by Leeds chairman Ken Bates.
Ridsdale, a former Leeds chairman, insists Bates informed him he was no longer welcome at the ground, although Bates later described the claim as “a pack of lies“.
Hammam, who was not at the game, today issued the following statement on Cardiff’s official website.
“Having spoken to four witnesses, I am totally satisfied that Peter Ridsdale’s behaviour before, during and after the game at Elland Road was impeccable and totally in line with accepted behaviour.
“Having also discussed with Cardiff officials who were in the boardroom, I can confirm they witnessed Ken Bates using foul and abusive language loudly in telling Peter Ridsdale that he was no longer welcome in the Leeds boardroom now or at any time in the future.
“Peter Ridsdale reacted by saying he was obviously not welcome and proceeded to shake Ken Bates' hand and wished him all the best and left.
“Any suggestion that Peter Ridsdale's ejection is a pack of lies is not factual and does not reflect the reality of what happened. I sincerely hope that Ken Bates, on reflection, will regret his action on the day and accept it was the heat of the moment outburst and that he will do the honourable thing by Peter.
“Peter has asked that Ken and his partner be welcomed if they chose to come to Ninian Park at any time. Peter is totally unfazed and calm about the episode. As owner and chairman of the club and more importantly as Peter’s colleague, I must stress that Peter always behaves impeccably and he certainly did in this case.
“I have known Ken for over 25 years and he remains a friend I respect and I put what should not have happened down to one of those things. Peter and I would like to wish Ken and Leeds all the best for this season.”
