Iraq’s Environment Minister Narmin Othman escaped an assassination attempt when gunmen attacked her convoy north of Baghdad wounding three bodyguards, state-run Iraqiya Television reported today.

The station did not say when the minister was attacked, but added that the shooting occurred south of the oil rich city of Kirkuk, 180 miles north of Baghdad.

“This is a cowardly act that will not prevent me from carrying my duties,” the station quoted Othman, a Kurd, as saying.

Othman belongs to President Jalal Talabani’s Patriotic Union of Kurdistan.
