Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder today asked the German parliament to hold a vote of confidence, a key step in his plan to call early national elections later this year.

Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder today asked the German parliament to hold a vote of confidence, a key step in his plan to call early national elections later this year.

Schroeder’s office handed the request to the president of the lower house of parliament this morning, said government spokesman Thomas Steg said.

The confidence vote is expected on Friday.
