The winners of RTÉ’s Francis MacManus Short Story Competition will be announced today.
A total of 700 entries were received from all over Ireland and from Irish people living abroad.
The author of the overall winning story will receive €3,000 and a Waterford Crystal trophy.
The competition, now in its 22nd year, is named after broadcaster and novelist Francis MacManus (1909-1965) who encouraged new writers and promoted new writing on radio.
The panel of judges, chaired by RTÉ producer Seamus Hosey, includes playwrights Billy Roche and Peter Sheridan and young writer Zlata Filipovic, who wrote a famous diary about her experiences during the Bosnian War.
All of the 22 shortlisted stories will be broadcast on RTÉ Radio in coming months, starting with the winning entry.
Prizes of €2,000 and €1,000 will be presented to the writers of the second- and third-placed stories.
Over the years the competition has broadcast more than 500 stories by new and emerging writers and set many authors on the path to publication and recognition.
