Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie is donating more than €8,700 to help a Sri Lankan children’s hospital after being moved by stories of lives shattered by two decades of civil war.
Jolie, the Lara Croft star and a goodwill ambassador for the UN’s refugee agency, said she was saddened after listening to a group of 500 orphan girls affected by the war between Sri Lanka’s government and the Tamil Tigers.
She said she would make the donation to help rebuild the paediatric ward in a hospital in Jaffna, an area that was the centre of the war.
The government and rebels signed a ceasefire in February 2002. A series of peace talks since September have raised hope that the war, which has killed 65,000 people, may be ended.
