A massive late winter snowstorm brought chaos to America's east coast today cancelling hundreds of flights.

Up to three feet of snow - together with sleet, freezing rain and winds of up to 30 mph - contributed to four deaths on roads in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and on New York's Long Island.

Winter storm warnings were issued from the normally mild southern state of North Carolina to New Hampshire in the north-east.

More than 100 flights were cancelled yesterday at Boston's airport. Hundreds more were cancelled at the New York region's three major airports.

Nearly 335 flights scheduled to fly in or out of Newark were called off and more cancellations were expected. Major commercial bus line Greyhound cancelled trips in and out of several north-eastern states.

Many schools closed for the day, including schools in New York, Philadelphia and Boston. A few states delayed their office opening hours to allow employees more time to commute.

At least 300,000 people were without power in Virginia and North and South Carolina.
