Donaghy: 'Seamo' is very big loss

Kerry starlet Kieran Donaghy has reiterated just how large a hole Séamus Moynihan has left in the Kingdom's defence after his decision to retire from inter-county football.

Kerry starlet Kieran Donaghy has reiterated just how large a hole Séamus Moynihan has left in the Kingdom's defence after his decision to retire from inter-county football.

Both Donaghy (August) and Moynihan (September) picked up their Vodafone GAA Player of the month awards in Dublin yesterday, and the 23-year-old Donaghy, who is hoping to be part of Ireland's International Rules side, was quick to praise his former team-mate.

"I don't think you could put it in words really to be honest - Séamo's going to be a very big loss," admitted the Tralee giant.

"The man's an inspiration to the whole county, never mind the fellas that are playing with him. We did it (won the All-Ireland) for Séamo and I'm just happy that we sent him off in the right order and for him to go away with his fourth All-Ireland medal is fantastic.

"That was his own goal when he set out on his playing career and it's fantastic that he got it."

Asked about Moynihan's greatest assets, Donaghy added: "I think his positional sense and his reading of the game. His bravery too. He's as hard as nails when it comes down to it.

"His will to win is second to none. I felt in the dressing room this year going into every game that we couldn't lose with him playing at centre back.

"People were giving out about him a small bit after the Longford game saying he gave Paul Barden a bit too much space but Paul Barden's a good footballer - he's training with us now for the International Rules. He got a few points early but Séamo settled down to brass tacks later on and shut him out.

"He's one of the best back in the country over the past 30 or 40 years and it's a pleasure to play with him. He'd be an inspiration to every Kerry young fella."

Moynihan himself made his feelings known on whether Jack O'Connor should step down after leading Kerry to their 34th Sam Maguire Cup.

"I think Jack has been a fantastic manager over the last three years. The amount of trophies he's won over the last three years speaks for itself, two All-Irelands, two National Leagues and two Munster titles. It's a fantastic array of medals over the last three years," said the Glenfesk man.

"If he was in any other county he'd be canonised. If he does stay it'll for the betterment of Kerry football. If he decides to step down that's his own personal decision."

Donaghy, whose switch from midfield to full-forward this summer saw him tear defences apart, is hopeful of O'Connor remaining on for his fourth season at the helm.

"I think the 30 fellas in the panel will be begging for him to stay on. At the end of the day he's his own man, he has his own decisions. His young fellas are coming towards the end of school and going to college, I don't know if he wants to spend time with them but I suppose his family will come first and hopefully if he sees fit they won't mind if he gives us another few years.

"Any fella who gets Kerry to three All-Ireland finals in three years is doing the right thing. He's a great manager, he's been very good to me all year and even the year before when I was coming on a sub."
