Mixed fortunes for Singh
Indian Jeev Milkha Singh went from the sublime to the ridiculous when the second round of the Quinn Insurance British Masters resumed after another fog delay at The Belfry today.
One of three players to hole-in-one yesterday – his came at the 177-yard seventh – Singh continued his second round from the 13th tee and hooked his drive out of bounds.
That was the hole where England’s Chris Wood had hit three balls over the fence in taking 10 on Thursday, but Singh found the fairway at the second attempt and pitched to within five feet of the flag.
Making the putt meant he limited the damage to a bogey five, but he then dropped another stroke by pulling his tee shot into the rough on the short 14th.
He fell into a tie for sixth on four under, but defending champion Lee Westwood, who was among the half of the field who were able to finish their second rounds yesterday, still had company at the top on six under.
Swede Alexander Noren birdied the 445-yard sixth, his 15th, to join the Ryder Cup star, who was grateful for a lie-in at home in Worksop after confessing to feeling “shattered” and “running on empty” in his 70 yesterday.
With over three hours lost to fog at the start of Friday’s play the 72 players still to complete were back on the Midlands course at 7.45am this morning.
However, only two minutes play was possible before the fog closed in again and it was 10.30am before another start was made.
As a consequence the third round was almost certainly going to spill into Sunday.
