We really wanted it, says Tribesmen's chief

Jubilant Galway hurling boss Conor Hayes has revealed he was desperate to win the National Hurling League title yesterday.

The Tribesmen picked up their eighth win in the competition at the expense of Waterford in a thrilling Gaelic Grounds tie.

Hayes said: "We really wanted to win this league.

"It was important to the squad's development and hopefully we can move things on again in the championship.

"I was very pleased with several aspects of our game, especially the manner in which the lads refused to panic when Waterford came back at them late on."

Meanwhile, Deise boss Justin McCarthy must pick his side up for their Munster SHC opener against Clare in six days time.

McCarthy said: "We reached the final, didn't perform as we wanted to, and that's the end of the matter.

“If we can't lift ourselves for Clare in the Munster championship, then we may as well not even be in the title race.

"Today was not our day but believe me, next Sunday is another day and we'll be ready and all fired up for whatever it brings.”
