Arsenal striker Thierry Henry could be facing disciplinary action from the British Football Association after police officers had to restrain him from confronting referee Graham Poll following last night’s Premiership game against Newcastle.
Poll has reported the incident to the FA, which could now charge Henry with misconduct. The Arsenal players were angry after the referee awarded Newcastle an 84th-minute penalty, which put them 2-1 ahead in the closing minutes.
Television replays suggested that the penalty decision was unfair, as Sol Campbell had played the ball first while challenging Laurent Robert.
Newcastle went on to score a third goal in injury time to record a victory that saw them leapfrog Liverpool at the top of the Premiership table. Bobby Robson's side now lead on goal difference, but Liverpool have a match in hand.
Arsenal, who would also have claimed the top spot if they won last night, are now in third place, three points off the pace.
Referring to Henry’s outburst at the end of last night’s game, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said: “My players were frustrated and I can understand that. If Thierry Henry is charged with anything, I will stand up for him.”
