A British man who has cycled, roller-bladed, and pedalled a boat in a bid to travel around the world on human power parked his kayak in Singapore today, marking the completion of two thirds of his expedition, which has so far lasted 11 years.

Jason Lewis, 37, arrived in the city-state after paddling across from Indonesia’s Sumatra Island, crossing the narrow Strait of Malacca – the world’s busiest shipping lane.

His arrival was delayed a day by a heavy tropical storm, five months after he set off in a kayak from Dili in East Timor.

“There have been a few close calls,” said Lewis.

“In Sumatra, I was attacked by some guys wanting some things off me,” he said.

He had earlier fought off a crocodile while crossing Australia.

Lewis, who left London in 1994 at the start of the journey, has to date travelled 34,500 miles, without assistance from motors or the wind.

From Singapore, Lewis plans to bicycle through Thailand, Vietnam, China, and then hike into the Himalayas.
