I will fight for Leeds’ place, says Irish star Keane

SUNDERLAND’S hopes of capturing £9m-rated Irish striker Robbie Keane have been dealt a major blow after the Leeds frontman vowed to stay at Elland Road and fight for his place.

SUNDERLAND’S hopes of capturing £9m-rated Irish striker Robbie Keane have been dealt a major blow after the Leeds frontman vowed to stay at Elland Road and fight for his place.

The Black Cats were yesterday given permission to speak to him after agreeing an undisclosed fee with the Yorkshire club, and were hopeful of tying up a deal within a matter of days.

But as the Wearsiders’ negotiators prepared to go to work, Keane himself threw a spanner into the works.

‘‘I do not want to speak to any other club,’’ he said. ‘‘I’m happy at Leeds United and am confident I can impress any new manager with my ability and commitment.’’

Keane’s stance, which puts him in a strong bargaining position, may cut little ice with Leeds, who are trying desperately to recoup £15m in an attempt to stave off the need to sell England defender Rio Ferdinand, reportedly a £35m target for Premiership rivals Manchester United.

But Black Cats boss Peter Reid will hope he can talk the Republic of Ireland hitman round as he attempts to find a long-term replacement for the player’s international team-mate Niall Quinn. Reid’s interest in the 21-year-old former Inter Milan player is well-known amid speculation several clubs, including Middlesbrough, were watching the situation closely, he has made the first move.

‘‘The Black Cats have agreed a fee for Robbie Keane after meeting Leeds United’s asking price for the Republic of Ireland striker, who was so impressive in this summer’s World Cup Finals,’’ said a club spokesman.

‘‘Sunderland has been given permission by Leeds to begin talks with the player and his representatives to complete the final details of the transfer.’’

Reid needs to recruit a top-class striker with player-coach Quinn nearing the end of his playing days, and a successful completion would come as a boost to Kevin Phillips, who has repeatedly been linked with a move away from the Stadium of Light.

And with the deadline for season ticket renewals on Friday, there could hardly be a better time for the Black Cats to make their move after the disappointments of the last campaign.

Managerless Leeds too would be happy to push through the deal with the club looking to cut its losses after the failure to make it into the Champions League, the reason they gave for David O’Leary’s sacking last week.

Keane’s stunning form for Ireland at the World Cup Finals has undoubtedly increased the market value of a player whose chances at Elland Road have been severely limited since Robbie Fowler’s arrival last season.

His three goals at the finals, including the late, late equaliser against Germany which paved the way for his side’s qualification for the last 16, as well as his last-ditch penalty against Spain, were high points in the Republic’s campaign.

Reid has just added experienced Irish defender Phil Babb to his squad to date, on a free transfer from Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon.
