Orlando Bloom is to star in Ridley Scott’s medieval epic Kingdom of Heaven.

The 26-year-old will play a peasant boy who becomes a heroic knight of the Crusades and falls in love with the princess of Jerusalem.

Movie experts predict the film could be even bigger than Gladiator, Scott’s last historical epic.

Kingdom of Heaven begins filming in Morocco in January and is scheduled for release in 2005.

Scott first saw Bloom’s potential when he cast the then-unknown actor in Black Hawk Down.

Since then he has become one of the mostly hotly tipped names in Hollywood, with roles in Pirates of the Caribbean and the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Next year he will appear with Brad Pitt in the swords-and-sandals epic Troy.
