Workers who are are allowed to “dress down” in the office are more productive than those who wear stuffy, formal clothes, new research revealed today.
A survey of 2,000 workers and managers also showed that both sides of industry now agreed about the benefits of relaxing dress codes.
Seven out of 10 employers said the performance of their staff improved if they were allowed to dress down, compared with just half during a similar survey five years ago.
Most of those polled by employment law firm Peninsula said dress down days had been a success, while workers said they felt frustrated if they had to wear formal business clothes.
Peter Done, managing director of Peninsula said: “Dress down days in the workplace are proving to be an effective tool for employers to increase productivity and is proving popular with employers and employees alike.
“Employers are increasingly recognising the link between an individual’s own comfort and confidence to their performance.
“The traditional view of business people’s dress at work is changing, with the shirt and tie image diminishing.”
