American soldiers returned fire but the man escaped and may have been injured.

Two rockets have also been fired at the airport in the city of Khost. No civilian or military casualties were reported in either incident.

Gates leading into the Bagram base were closed briefly after the shooting incident. The base north of Kabul is the headquarters of the US-led coalition forces.

No additional security has been put in place at Bagram ahead of the ceremony.

Soldiers have been told "to be aware of their surroundings ... and to go about their jobs in a safe manner."
