A new official royal wedding app which offers a 3D tour of Westminster Abbey is to be released, it was announced today.

Mobile phone users will be able to take a virtual stroll through the ancient church, starting at Great West Door – the point where Kate Middleton will begin her walk down the aisle to meet Prince William.

Abbey 3D, featuring an internal scaled replica of the 1000-year-old Abbey, uses revolutionary laser scanning technology and 3D modelling.

Proceeds from its sale will be split between William and Kate’s Charitable Gift Fund and the Westminster Abbey Foundation.

The Very Reverend Dr John Hall, Dean of Westminster, said: “William Caxton set up the first printing press in England on the Abbey’s doorstep in 1476 so it seems very apt in our fast moving world of communications that we are releasing Abbey 3D for the first royal wedding of the 21st century.”

The app for Android, iPhone and iPad users will also offer information on “hotspots” such as the Grave of the Unknown Warrior and detail their significance on the day of the wedding.

It will cost €3.39 and is due to go on sale later this week via the Android Market and the Apple Store.
